The International Foundation Year is intended for academically able international students who wish to study at a University in the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand but who do not yet have the qualifications they need to start an undergraduate degree programme. It is a full-time, academic year course which provides international students with all the language and skills they need for university life.
The International Foundation Year combines general English course with special study course which allows studying the relevant subjects needed for the chosen undergraduate degree programme and helps develop the necessary study skills. The Foundation Year provides an excellent opportunity for students to adapt to the higher education system and prepares them for entry to a University undergraduate degree. In addition, international students learn about life in Britain, USA, Canada, other country, gain useful computer skills, improve their level of English and develop their IELTS or TOEFL exam skills.
It is particularly suitable for students whose own educational system does not provide the necessary specialization for direct admission to Honors courses.
Besides that, the International Foundation Year is a guaranteed entry to a chosen university on successful completion of the course.
What will you study?
The International Foundation Year is a tailor-made three-term course of academic subjects, study skills and English language training that provides an intensive, direct path to degree study.
The Foundation Year is rigorous, academically demanding and designed specifically to ensure that international students gain the skills and knowledge to succeed in their degree.
When you apply to the International Foundation Year you are asked to specify the undergraduate degree programme you wish to join after your International Foundation Year.
The Foundation Year is made up of modules designed to provide you with the entire academic and study skills you will require to make a success of your chosen degree course. Some modules are compulsory, some are determined by the degree you have chosen and some are optional. All Foundation Year students are required to undertake Academic skills module, which covers the following areas: essential study skills, IELTS preparation, life in Britain, USA or other country, Information Technology. And a selection of specialist Subject Modules relevant to your chosen degree course.
The Subject Modules can vary from: Business Studies, Communication Studies, Economics, Finance, Geography, Law, Media Studies, Politics, Art and Design, Engineering and History.
Entry requirements
In order to gain admission to the International Foundation Year, you should normally have the following:
- Secondary or high school leaving certificate. Evidence of completion, in the form of a School Leaving Certificate, should be enclosed with the enrolment form.
- Minimum Intermediate level of the English Language.
English language preparation
If you require additional language training in order to reach this level, you can first join the English Language Preparation (ELP) course. You will need to take the ELP course for one or two terms, before the start of your academic studies on the Foundation Year to ensure your English skills are strong enough to join the International Foundation Programme.
A number of English Language Preparation courses that you can take are offered. They are aimed at building grammar and all communication skills and include teacher-led discussions, written exercises, group work and role-plays.
If you have an English language level equivalent to IELTS 4.0 you need one term of English language training. If you are currently at IELTS 3.0 you need two terms of English Language Preparation.
University-style teaching
The International Foundation Year introduces you to the style of teaching that you will experience when you progress onto your degree. You will be taught in tutorials, seminar style classes and larger group lectures.
Flexible entry
You can begin the International Foundation Year in either September or January for degree entry in the following September. You can start English Language Preparation at four different dates each year, depending on how much preparation you need.
Assessment
You will be assessed regularly throughout the course through a variety of written and oral assignments, and your tutors help you prepare these. This will ensure that your progress is on track to achieve the standard required for progression onto your degree course at a chosen university. Your development is monitored through continuous coursework and specific assessments at the end of each term or module. You will also be required to complete a series of presentations and extended essays as part of your overall assessment.
University application

They guide you through every stage of the application process - from choosing the right course at the right university, to completing your online application form, providing references, writing your Personal Statement and dealing with replies.

We have an in-depth understanding of the academic strengths of different institutions, their level of popularity amongst international students and how their admissions departments operate.
Welfare
Your health and welfare during the International Foundation Year are of the utmost importance. As a registered student you will have full access to the Student Medical Practice or National Health Service and also while studying on the International Foundation Year you will be assigned a Personal Tutor who will be available to discuss any problems that might occur and to offer help, advice and encouragement.
The University or Language school has an International Student Office, which provides information, advice, social activities and general support for students and their families on a wide range of matters, including arrival arrangements, settling in, immigration, safety, healthcare, making friends, study skills, adapting to life in the UK, working in the UK, and so on.
The Student Union or all Language schools has a Welfare Officer who also provides guidance and advice on matters such as housing, finance and immigration
In simple terms the Foundation Year provides you with all the skills necessary to study for a degree at University. Successful completion guarantees automatic progression to the next stage of your chosen degree programme. It's about giving you a second chance - whatever career you have in mind, the Foundation Year is the first rung on the ladder to success.
The majority of students studying on the Foundation Year have successfully progressed to higher education degree courses in different countries.
